Wix SEO: what you can control and how to let AI search read your site
Published 7 October 20269 min readBy the SmoothSeen editorial team
Wix SEO is handled in the SEO & GEO dashboard and the editor: per-page titles, descriptions and URLs, an editable robots.txt, an automatic sitemap, JSON-LD structured data and 301 redirects. The server is off limits: Wix handles headers, compression and caching. For AI search, check the robots.txt and the llms.txt that Wix generates.
Key points
- On Wix you control titles, descriptions, URLs, robots.txt, JSON-LD structured data and 301 redirects; the server side (headers, compression, caching) belongs to Wix.
- The robots.txt Wix generates blocks no AI crawler; the AI-blocking example in Wix's own help includes ChatGPT-User, which OpenAI uses for requests made by people.
- Wix adds its own markup to product pages, Bookings services, blog posts, events and, if you add a name and address, LocalBusiness on the homepage; you can add up to five markups per page.
- Wix generates an automatic llms.txt on sites with a paid plan and a custom domain; Google says no AI text files are needed.

Wix is a hosted website builder: Wix supplies the server, the template and the code, and you work through panels. That makes a lot of things simpler and a few things impossible. This guide separates what you can change from what you can't, using the menu paths Wix's help centre documents today. Wix has several editors (Wix Editor, Studio and Harmony) and the menus differ between them; where the help gives an exact path, we quote it.

Where are the SEO settings in Wix?
Wix works at two levels: settings for a single page and settings for a whole page type.
- Per page. In the Wix Editor: "Pages & Menu", the more actions icon next to the page, then "SEO basics". That is where you change the URL slug, the title tag and the meta description1. If you leave them alone, Wix uses "Page name | Site name" as the title1.
- Per page type. In the dashboard: SEO & GEO, "Tools and settings", "SEO Settings", then the page type under "Edit by page type". Use it to set the pattern for every blog post or every product at once2.
- Indexing. The same page panel has the option that lets search engines index the page; switching it off adds a
noindex1.
A default title that repeats the site name on every page is not an error, but it wastes the most visible part of the search result. Write the titles of your five most important pages by hand.
robots.txt on Wix: the default file and how to open it to AI search
According to Wix, the robots.txt it generates lets search engines reach every page, except password-protected pages, members-only pages and pages where indexing is switched off3. You edit it in SEO & GEO, "Tools and settings", "Robots.txt Editor" and "View File"3.
On 7 October 2026 we checked the robots.txt of two sites hosted on Wix. Both carried the same default block: a general allow for everyone, a rule for the ?lightbox= parameter, rules for Google's AdsBot, a block on PetalBot and a crawl delay for dotbot and AhrefsBot. No AI crawler was blocked. If you have never touched the file, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can read your site.
What Wix's help suggests, and why it needs a caveat
Wix has a help article on blocking AI crawlers that suggests disallowing CCBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and BingAI4. It mixes different things:
- GPTBot and CCBot are training or archive crawlers. OpenAI says that disallowing GPTBot signals your content should not be used to train its models5. Blocking them is a legitimate editorial choice and does not remove you from answers.
- ChatGPT-User is not an automatic crawler: OpenAI uses it for actions a person asks for inside ChatGPT, and warns that robots.txt rules may not apply5.
- BingAI does not appear in any Microsoft documentation we could find. A line for a name no bot uses does no harm, but it does nothing either.
- OAI-SearchBot, the crawler that decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search, is not on the list. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers5.
If you want out of training data but still in the answers, this is the robots.txt. Keep the block your site already has and add the AI groups below it:
# What Wix already generates: leave it as it is
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: *?lightbox=
# AI search crawlers: they can read and cite you
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
User-agent: Claude-User
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
Disallow: *?lightbox=
# Model training: blocking it does not remove you from answers
User-agent: GPTBot
User-agent: ClaudeBot
User-agent: Google-Extended
User-agent: Applebot-Extended
User-agent: CCBot
Disallow: /Two details. A bot with its own group ignores the User-agent: * group, which is why the search group repeats the general rules. And Google-Extended is not a crawler but a token: it controls whether Google uses your content to train Gemini and for grounding in the Gemini app, and it does not affect your inclusion in Google Search6. AI Overviews and AI Mode depend on Googlebot7. We ran the file through Python's robots.txt parser: the search crawlers come out allowed and the five training ones blocked.
The same Wix article suggests ticking nosnippet in the robots meta tag so your content is not used in AI Overviews4. It works, but Google applies it to the whole of Search: the page also loses its snippet in the ordinary results7.
Structured data: what Wix adds and what you add
Wix adds its own markup to Wix Stores product pages, Wix Bookings services, Wix Blog posts and Wix Events pages. If you add a business name and address, it also creates LocalBusiness markup for the homepage2. For the blog, it can generate markup with AI from each post2.
For every other page, you write the markup:
- Editor, "Pages & Menu", more actions, "SEO basics".
- "Advanced SEO" tab, "Structured Data Markup", "+Add New Markup".
- Paste the JSON-LD and apply.
Wix only accepts JSON-LD, with a 7,000-character limit per markup and five markups per page2. Before adding one, check what Wix already outputs on that page so you do not end up with two LocalBusiness or Product blocks. And remember Google's rule: what you mark up has to be visible on the page8.
On FAQs: Wix's own help reminds you that Google only shows FAQ rich results for government and health websites2. You can keep the markup, but do not expect the drop-down in Google.
301 redirects when you change a URL
When you change a page's URL, Wix creates the 301 redirect from the old one automatically, except for blog posts: there you have to create it yourself9. You view, edit and create them in SEO & GEO, "URL Redirect Manager". Redirects only work with a connected custom domain9.
If you are migrating from another platform, set up the redirects before you switch the DNS: every old URL that ends in a 404 loses what it had earned in Google.
Speed: the Site Speed dashboard
Wix has a speed dashboard in two parts: "Real visitor experience", with the Core Web Vitals of your real visits as measured by Wix, and a lab simulation using Google PageSpeed Insights10. Real-visitor data only appears once the site has had at least ten sessions in the last seven days10.
The thresholds that matter are Google's, at the 75th percentile: LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less11. As you cannot touch the server, the improvements are on the page: lighter images, fewer apps and fewer animated elements on the first screen.
llms.txt and AI visibility on Wix
Wix generates and maintains an llms.txt, a text file at the site root that summarises the business for AI agents. You find it in SEO & GEO, "Tools and settings", "Go to llms.txt". It needs a site on a paid plan, a custom domain and indexing switched on, and a toggle lets you opt out12. Once you edit it, it stops updating automatically until you reset it12.
Keep it in proportion: Google says no AI text files or special markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode7, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity do not mention it on their crawler pages. It is optional and cheap, with no proven effect.
In July 2025 Wix announced an AI visibility overview inside its SEO suite that tracks citations, sentiment and traffic arriving from assistants13. It measures outcomes; what decides whether an assistant can read you is still the robots.txt and the HTML of each page.
How to check it
- robots.txt: open
https://yourdomain.com/robots.txtand look for OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. If they are absent and the general group allows everything, they are allowed. - Response per bot:
curl -I -A "OAI-SearchBot/1.3" https://yourdomain.com/should return a 200, just as it does with a browser user-agent. - Structured data: Google's Rich Results Test or the schema.org validator.
- Speed: PageSpeed Insights, with field data at the top and the lab test below.
- Indexing: the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.
What SmoothSeen does with this
SmoothSeen analyses a page on your Wix site as it would any other. In Web visibility it checks robots.txt, sitemap, canonical and noindex, titles, structured data and speed using the Core Web Vitals that PageSpeed Insights publishes. In AI visibility it separates search crawlers from training crawlers when reading your robots.txt, requests the page with each crawler's user-agent to catch a 403, and checks whether there is an llms.txt.
What to do this week
Open your robots.txt and decide what you want to do about training; always leave the door open to OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Then review the titles of your five main pages. If you want to see how AI crawlers read your page, analyse it with SmoothSeen.
If you are comparing builders, the Squarespace and Webflow guides cover the same ground for those platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix good for SEO?
Wix covers the basics Google asks for: per-page titles and descriptions, an automatic sitemap, an editable robots.txt, 301 redirects and JSON-LD structured data. The limitation is the server: you do not choose headers, compression or caching. For most local business or service websites that is not what decides rankings; content, titles and page speed weigh more.
Does Wix block ChatGPT or other AI crawlers?
Not by default. The robots.txt Wix generates blocked no AI crawler on the two sites we checked. If someone edited it following the example in Wix's help, it may block GPTBot and ChatGPT-User; that takes you out of OpenAI's training data but not out of ChatGPT search, which depends on OAI-SearchBot.
Can I add FAQ schema on Wix?
Yes, as manual markup or by switching on the markup for collapsible lists in blog posts. But since 2023 Google only shows FAQ rich results for government and health websites, so a business site will not get the drop-down. The markup does no harm; it simply does not earn that result.
Can I change security headers on Wix?
Wix's help does not document any setting for editing HTTP headers such as Content-Security-Policy or Strict-Transport-Security; HTTPS is handled by the platform. If an audit flags a missing header on a Wix site, record it as a platform limit and focus on what you do control.
